Since students who graduate with an English Studies in English and American literature book are trained to ask probing questions about large bodies of texts and then to formulate, analyze, and answer those questions in coherent, persuasive prose —skills vital to any number of careers—English majors have much to choose from after graduation. You will focus on how and why American writers have addressed notions of national and individual identity through their creative practices. You will also learn about the formal innovations of American writers in order to understand the concept of 'voice' in terms of, for example, expression, representation, protest, and subjectivity. Whether we are looking at sonnets by Shakespeare, Science Fiction short stories, or novels by Chinua Achebe, Virginia Woolf, or Rigoberto Gonzalez, we are moving across imaginative boundaries: into the past or into the literary culture of a different society. Graduate Faculty members in Literary and Cultural Studies work on varied scholarly projects, share a commitment to the analysis of literature within larger cultural, social and political contexts, and utilize a wide range of critical methodologies, such as textual recovery, archival work, digital scholarship, and theoretical analyses.

American Literature offers selections from a variety of literary genres and expository texts to improve critical thinking, reading comprehension, word analysis, vocabulary development, and literary response and analysis. Ultimately you are invited to become an "eighteenth-centuryist" and to make imaginative connections between the exciting range of genres that emerged in this century and the culture that produced them. Each unit will also evaluate expository text including historical documents, letters, speeches, and memoirs. Five electives one of which may, with justification and the approval of the Graduate Director, be taken outside the Department. In certain fields, the director and second reader may determine the length and format of the thesis requirement.
